Three factors of workplace happiness

Three factors of workplace happiness

Happiness is a concept in positive psychology that encourages focusing on the things that are going well and that provide strength. The UN's International Day of Happiness aims to draw our attention to the importance of happiness and well-being at the core of goal-oriented societies.

The International Day of Happiness has been celebrated annually on March 20th since 2012. It challenges us to reflect on the meaning of happiness and the ways to pursue it. What kind of world should we strive to build around us so that happiness remains possible for everyone in the future? What makes you happy, and what can you do to help the people around you be happy?

We spend a significant portion of our weekdays at work, so the atmosphere there is not insignificant. But what factors actually make us happy at work? And can working truly contribute to overall happiness?

According to the self-determination theory, humans have three basic psychological needs that together explain a large part of the happiness experienced by individuals. These needs are the sense of autonomy, the sense of competence, and the sense of belonging to a community.

Three Key Components of Happiness at the Workplace

1. Autonomy – The Freedom to Work Your Own Way

Imagine a situation where you can decide how and when you do your work. This freedom, or autonomy, is one of the greatest sources of job satisfaction. When employees feel they can influence their own work, their commitment, motivation, and well-being increase. Autonomy is one of the most important enablers of happiness in the workplace.

How does this manifest in everyday life?

  • Flexible working hours: The ability to align work with personal schedules enhances the sense of control.
  • Remote work opportunities: Working in an environment that suits you improves well-being.
  • Personal decision-making: When you can plan how to execute your work and share development ideas in a safe environment, the experience of happiness is strengthened.

2. Meaningfulness – The Sense That Your Work Matters

Is there anything more rewarding than the feeling that your work makes the world a slightly better place? The meaningfulness of work is crucial for the happiness experienced at work. When we feel that our work has purpose, it increases motivation and feelings of belonging.

How to find meaningfulness in work?

  • Set personal goals: Even small achievements on the way to a larger goal bring a sense of meaning.
  • Talk to your supervisor: Understanding how your contributions impact the bigger picture enhances the experience of meaningfulness.
  • Participate in volunteer activities at work: Many companies offer opportunities to engage in socially important projects.

3. Community – Together We Are More

The people around us greatly influence how we feel at work. A good work community supports, encourages, and brings joy to everyday life. Research shows that positive relationships in the workplace increase happiness and commitment. People enjoy working with interesting and genuine individuals the most.

How to nurture a good work community?

  • Organize joint events: Casual gatherings, such as after-work events or team nights, strengthen team spirit.
  • Encourage open communication: When things are discussed honestly, misunderstandings decrease. This involves creating a braver space where everyone's opinions are welcome and respected.
  • Recognize and appreciate diversity: A diverse team brings new perspectives and enriches the work community.

Employee Benefits Supporting Holistic Well-Being

While the factors mentioned above are crucial, the benefits provided by employers can also significantly enhance job satisfaction. Edenred's employee benefits, such as the exercise and culture benefit (Virike) and the lunch benefit (Lounari), support employees' well-being in various ways.

These benefits are not just a nice addition; by fully utilizing them, you can maintain your physical and mental health, improve your overall well-being, and gain new experiences of happiness.

How to utilize employee benefits on the journey to happiness?

  • Sports and culture benefit, or Virike: Use this benefit for hobbies or cultural events that bring joy and balance to your work life.
  • Lunch benefit, or Lounari: Take advantage of the lunch benefit to support diverse and healthy eating during your workday.
  • Commuting benefit: Use this benefit to cover public transportation costs, making your commutes smoother and more affordable.
  • Massage benefit: Regular massages can help prevent stress and bodily discomfort while providing you with a restorative moment for yourself.
  • Wellbeing benefit: Regularly check your health status to avoid unexpected illnesses, and keep your mind at ease knowing everything is in order.

Happiness at work does not arise from a single factor, but is the sum of many things. When both the employee and the employer invest in well-being, they create an environment together where it is good to work and thrive. A healthy employment relationship can thus make both the employer and the employee happy. When work serves as a positive resource and a platform for self-development, its beneficial effects extend far into everyday life and contribute holistically to a happy life.
