What are fringe and staff benefits?

It is typical for employee benefits that they must be provided using targeted payment instruments (such as Edenred's payment methods), and their use is restricted to predefined locations.

Additionally, they differ from each other in terms of taxation and are divided into fringe benefits and staff benefits. Continue reading to learn more about them!

Fringe benefits

Fringe benefits offered by Edenred are lunch, commuting, and bicycle benefits.

Fringe benefits are non-salary rewards that are tax-free for employees and tax-deductible for employers. These benefits can be provided when salaries are paid to oneself or employees.

A shareholder-entrepreneur of a limited company can utilize fringe benefits for themselves, even if they are the only employee of their company.

A sole proprietor can offer fringe benefits to their employees but not to themselves (a business owner or professional is not considered an employee and therefore does not belong to the company's staff).

Receiving fringe benefits does not require the withdrawal of salary for partners in a limited partnership or general partnership.

Fringe benefits do not need to be offered collectively to the staff; instead, the employer can determine how much benefit is provided per employee within the limits of tax-free maximum amounts

Staff benefits

Staff benefits offered by Edenred are sports and culture, massage, and wellbeing benefits.

Staff benefits are benefits provided based on the employment relationship, but they are not direct compensation for work performed.

Shareholders can receive employee benefits tax-free under the same conditions as other employees of the company.

A sole proprietor cannot offer employee benefits to themselves, but they can provide benefits to their employees.

A partner in a general partnership or limited partnership can receive employee benefits if they work for the company.

For employee benefits to be tax-free, they must be offered collectively to the entire staff. However, the employer can determine how much benefit is provided per employee within the limits of tax-free maximum amounts and may include a possible deductible portion.

Lunch benefit

The tax-supported lunch benefit is the most popular employee benefit in Finland, and Edenred's lunch network is the widest on the market. The lunch benefit can be used as a payment method in restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores. Additionally, the benefit covers food delivery costs and is also valid on Wolt.

The lunch benefit is a tax-free benefit of up to 25%, which is loaded onto employees' accounts on a monthly basis. The lunch benefit can be offered to employees as a fringe benefit (an affordable salary increase) or as a lunch deduction (deducted from the employee's salary).

Sports and culture benefit

The tax-free sports and culture benefit, also known as Edenred Virike, is a staff benefit that can be offered to a company's employees similar to a salary increase.

Virike can be used for online training, movie, theater, or concert tickets, ski passes, museum visits, or gym memberships. The benefit provides excellent opportunities for various hobbies and leisure activities.

The Virike benefit is a deductible expense that you can offer to your employees without significant additional costs.

Massage benefit

The tax-free massage benefit relaxes, restores, and helps prevent sick leave and stress. Employees can use the benefit for both classical and sports massage.

You can grant the massage benefit to your employees tax-free within the limits set by the tax authorities. From an entrepreneur's perspective, the massage benefit is a deductible expense for tax purposes.

Commuting benefit

The tax-free commuting benefit is a fringe benefit that can be offered similarly to a salary increase. It is intended for travel between home and the workplace. However, there are no restrictions on the number of trips or the time of day for using the ticket.

Granting the commuting benefit to employees can help reduce salary costs, as offering a tax-free benefit does not burden the company's budget as much as a traditional salary increase. By combining the commuting benefit with other employee benefits, you can maximize the advantages of these perks.

Wellbeing benefit

A tax-free wellbeing benefit is a cost-effective way to maintain employees' overall health and stand out in the employer market. Employees can use the wellbeing benefit for services such as dental care, physiotherapy, or specialist consultations, which helps prevent burnout and maintain good work capacity. See the full list.

Entrepreneurs can use medical and other healthcare services tax-free only as part of occupational healthcare. The tax exemption for voluntary occupational healthcare services requires that the entrepreneur has arranged mandatory occupational healthcare for themselves. Additionally, healthcare services must be based on an occupational healthcare action plan prepared by the company.

From a tax perspective, the wellbeing benefit is a deductible expense, meaning you can offer your employees a wider range of health services without significant additional costs.

Bike benefit

The tax-free bike benefit is a fringe benefit that can be offered similarly to a salary increase. It is a choice that promotes employee well-being and is a step towards the company's environmental goals.

The benefit is tax-efficient, and the employer can offer it either on top of the salary or as part of the total compensation. The most common method is to deduct it monthly from the employee's gross salary.

The bicycle benefit is a cost-effective way for employers to support employees' commuting and leisure activities. Thanks to the tax exemption, employees can acquire a bicycle at up to 35% lower cost! Please note that the bicycle benefit is considered part of the commuting benefit.
